Rams 39 Jayhawks 34

Posted by Selby On October - 5 - 2010

Another exciting game for Southeast Polk for sure, but a very shaky second half almost came back to haunt the Rams.  After Urbandale marched down and scored the first touchdown to lead 7-0, the Rams responded with 26 unanswered points to lead 26-7.  From there, the Rams had to hang on and outlast Urbandale’s furious charge to win, 39-34.  It looked like SE Polk was going to run away with it and name the score, but something got in to the Jayhawks and the game swung completely around.  Luckily for SEP, their offense was only stopped a couple of times.  Kyle Starcevich had a great night passing, hooking up mainly with Cody McCoy and Zach Warren for six connections apiece, of which three were big touchdowns to Warren out of the backfield and Joe Hanson had a couple big catches, as well.  Jake Sargent was well over 230 yards rushing on the night, one of his best games to this point.  He battered several Jayhawk would-be tacklers and ran amok for a couple of scores.  The Jayhawk defenders were sore Saturday morning, I guarantee you that.  They will not soon forget Sargent’s punishing runs.  Two of Urbandale’s touchdowns were 80 yard scampers, and another score resulted from a long pass play were the Jayhawks got behind the coverage setting up a goal-to-go situation.  The last score for Urbandale followed a SEP fumble that thwarted a drive to put the Rams back up by two touchdowns late in the game.  However, after the ensuing Jayhawk score, SEP drove the length of the field and kneeled down to run out the clock on the Jayhawk 2-yard line.  Some defensive questions for Polk to answer, but a great win, regardless.  As for Urbandale, you might remember I wrote that they would not make the playoffs in my ‘ridiculously early playoff’ post earlier…Well, they may just make it if they can play as good as they did in that second half against the Rams.  They host Sioux City North in a very winnable game before heading to Mason City for a head-to-head that should determine who stays home for the postseason.  Mason City has a one game lead on Urbandale right now, but hosts Valley next week.  That will be a tough one for the Mohawks to get.  If Des Moines Roosevelt AND Des Moines East implode, both Urbandale and Mason City might have a shot, but it should come down to that Week 8 matchup in Mason City.  Here are the images from the game in our SEP Spotlight.  As always, thanks to Dr. Todd Meyer of Meyer Chiropractic for sharing his gallery with us each week.  If you want to let Dr. Meyer know how much you like his work, then check out his photo site and buy some of these wonderful photos.  And, as always, please consider Meyer Chiropractic for when you or one of your young athletes need adjustment or consultation.  It’s all about personal wellness, folks.  The Rams will be home this week for Homecoming, as they host Indianola…
