Both Coach Miller of Fort Dodge and Anderson of Urbandale will tell you their teams were a bit sloppy tonight. However, you have to credit both teams on defense. The Dodgers happened to make the most of the opportunity their defense gave them. 24-0 the final. more on the Blitz Extra next week. Here is a look at the Highlights of the game on the Blitz.
Scores of note:
Couple small School Powerhouse Programs are in mid season form no matter what class they play Emmetsburg 48, Spencer 23
Madrid 63, Monroe PCM 14
3 Powerhouse Programs lose but don’t hit the panic button, all steping up a class: Council Bluffs Lincoln 49, Harlan 34
Regina, Iowa City 21, Solon 15
Hull Western Christian 14, Inwood West Lyon 13 look out 2-a fans two impressive wins for Regina and Hull WC

Road Trip to the new Target Field(more later), Softball Practice, Family Stuff, Clones Thursday , Friday Night Football, Huge Family Wedding/Hawks Saturday, More Softball Sunday- Fantasy Football Draft Sunday Night.. so I apologize and applaud you at the same time.
Tonight our Video will be coming to you from Urbandale as the J-Hawks defense prepares Fort Dodge. Dodgers Clayton and Caston are two kids I’m looking forward to seeing in person. The winner of this game will gain serious CIML Street cred for us here at ICS..

Pouring over the scores after week one really creates some perspective for the rest of the way. I’ve found over the years that this week can make a huge impact on how you rank teams the rest of the way. That can be very dangerous if you are really projecting who will end up in the dome. Some scores can be a tad misleading for a school like BGM who jumped up to play Iowa City Regina. Keep in mind our more in depth look at preseason thoughts versus rankings always makes more sense. Breaking teams into the three categories we do, holds up better than rankings. I think you will find those semi-tough teams will be there. Other teams will bounce between dome contenders and busters as the level of play, injuries, coaching, tradition, and other factors impact their season. An example to point to is Treynor’s impressive win over IKM/Manning. When Treynor is good, coach Owens gets it done. In 2003 they rolled a strong Madrid team 42-15 in the finals. I don’t know if the Cardinals are loaded to the hilt, but Jake Allen ran for 100, had 129 yards receiving, and 4 td’s. Mitch Godfrey threw for 229 yards and the defense shut out a great program. My take is 1-A district 8 will be a beast. I would also say don’t write off IKM-Manning for 2010. This is just one of those week one games that can make a huge impression, but it may leave you scratching your head come playoff time.
Many top teams in Class A lost games, but remember some our playing up. AHST-BGM-West Hancock Gehlen Catholic are not teams to forget about at this point in the season. A lot of teams posted some gigantic numbers in 8-man, but you really need about 4 weeks to get a true grasp of this wild class.

Newton Pella meet for the first time since 1942. Probably two of the most class programs in Iowa. Tonight Jay McKinstrey tallied his 100th win. We have been in the locker room for hundreds of high school coaches and Jay and Ed are two of the best people you could have coach your student athlete. Tonight the Dutch got the win, the Kyln kid gave them some stability right away from the QB position and it looks as though the have plenty of play makers to help him. Newton will get their feet under them and the timing of that classic wishbone style will pay off as the season progresses. Coach Ergenbright is proud member of the Newton Tradition. He was a player for the only state championship team coached by Frank Gilson back in 1980.. Coach told me before the game that star player from the 1980 team, Trey Jackson is battling colon cancer. We wish him our best.
Now here is a look at Coach Ergenbright’s pregame speech from tonight’s game. More on week one and rankings to follow later this week.

Week Zero is out. We did update our rankings so you will be able to view them right here on our home page. As mentioned, don’t get to excited about these until we see results from next week. Obviously we gave you plenty to look at from Valley-Dowling. In other games of note Ankeny did put up some numbers through the air against Waukee. Soph. Joel Lanning was money when the Hawks did go to the air. However, don’t rush to the JerPa is going Mike Martz just yet. The hawks still rushed the ball 40 times and only put it up 12. That said, Lanning was 10-12 for 297 and 4 TD’s so the threat is there, but I’m not sure we should consider them a pass first team by any means.
Interesting win for Sioux City East over Heelen. A good start for the one time state champs, and probably not time to panic for the fans of the Crusaders.
Rain delayed Johntson’s trip to Ottumwa on Friday but Coach Woodley and the Dragons have to feel good about getting a season starting win on the road.
Great to start the season. As expected Dowling had the skill positions covered and then some. Valley Irons out some things on offense.. My thoughts are they will be a strong outfit. Don’t get caught up on scores, these teams are both solid. Dowling still #1 Valley a top ten club.
Here are some of the extended Highlights you will see on the Blitz Extra next week!
After much debate I put together a full preseason look. I group teams into three categories every season. Semi-tough, Dome Contenders, and Dome Busters. I did put together a top ten but don’t consider this a great barometer for preseason until teams have all played one game. After we get through week one and week 0 I think we get a true preseason top ten. We will be at Valley/Dowling week 0 and will get you plenty of VID. db
Listen up… I LOVE RICK STANZI. IF STANZI WOULD HAVE TAKEN IOWA TO AN UNDEFEATED NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP, I WOULD HAVE NAMED MY NEXT DOG AFTER HIM…OR FORCE ONE OF MY THREE DAUGHTERS TO NAME THEIR CHILD Stanzi…
STANZI BINGHAM…WORKS FOR A BOY OR GIRL…OR lazer A STANZI TATTOO ON MY THROWING ARM…SO AS YOU READ ON…DON’T GET ANY OF MY THOUGHTS CONFUSED WITH THE FACT THAT I AM A STANZI FAN.
STANZI IS NOW 17-4 AS A STARTER. UH, HUM. THE DUDE HAS 14 PICKS AND 15 TD’S THIS SEASON…LOOKING BACK AT LAST YEAR, HE DID NOT COME OUT GUNS A-BLAZIN, AND FOR THAT MATTER, REALLY HAS NEVER SET HAWK NATION ON FIRE. IN THE KIRK FERENTZ ERA HE IS NOT EVEN IN THE TOP 4 OR 5 BEST. TATE…BANKS…CHANDLER…MAYBE EVEN SCOTTY MULLEN IS ON PAR WITH STANZI????? but he’s just a hell of a ton better fit then ole Jake… more on the hefty lefty later…
Stanzi WASN’T A WINNER AT FIRST…HE DID NOT RALLY US TO BEAT A HORRIBLE PITT TEAM…LOST AT ILLINOIS AND AT MICHIGAN STATE, AND THREW INCOMPLETIONS ON HIS FINAL FOUR ATTEMPTS TRYING TO RALLY US AGAINST NORTHWESTERN LAST YEAR…YES NW…I REALIZE STANZI HAS GAINED LEADERSHIP AND THE TRUST OF HIS TEAMMATES SINCE THEN, BUT TO SAY IOWA WINS THE GAME IF HE DID NOT GET HURT IS LIKE TAKING A LEAK INTO THE WIND. I’M NOT SURE WHAT MAKES IOWA FANS SAY THESE THINGS??
AFTER THE TD PASS TO McNUTT, HE WAS 3 OF 8 FOR 40 YARDS…A BAD PICK, AND THEN THE PLAY THAT ENDED HIS REGULAR SEASON…SO WHAT?? You’re telling me that WEGHER DOESN’T FUMBLE…AND HIS TD DOESN’T GET CALLED BACK IF STANZI STAYS IN THE GAME?? I’M JUST SAYING GROW UP AND BE REAL. NW BEAT US LAST YEAR AND THIS YEAR…AND WILL DO IT AGAIN IF OUR QB ISN’T MORE PREPARED ON A NAKED BOOT IN THE END ZONE…NW DOES A GREAT JOB AGAINST IOWA…
DID YOU REALLY WATCH JAMES VANDENBERG?? I MEAN REALLY? FREE KIN
K.O.K. LET THE DUDE THROW THE BALL 27 TIMES…READ MY LIPS, 27 TIMES…MAYBE ME ‘N OLE KEN ARE THE ONLY ONES WHO NOTICED THE DEEP OUT WITH SIZZLE…THE ABILITY TO UNDERSTAND WHEN AND WHY TO THROW THE BALL AWAY…AND WITH CONVICTION!!! MAYBE ME AND KEN ARE DUMB…BUT I’M WITH K.O.K. JVB IS GOING TO BE A LIVIN’ WITCH… HE IS CHUCK LONG WITH GAS.
AND, IF I EVER HEAR ANOTHER HAWK FAN MAKE A REFERENCE TO JAKE CHRISTENSON, I WILL FIND SOMEONE TO GO TANYA HARDING ON YOU. JAKE HAS A HEART OF GOLD…HE HAS GREAT CHARACTER…I THINK HE IS A MORE NATURAL LEADER THAN STANZI…BUT HE WAS NOT A FIT AT THE UNIVERSITY OF IOWA…AND DRUNK, (I’m sure the kid has never drank) BLINDFOLDED, WITH ONE ARM TIED BEHIND HIS BACK, JVB WOULD BE BETTER THAN JAKE…
LET’S GO…LET’S START BELIEVING…LET’S NOT EXPECT ANYTHING BUT GREATNESS…YES, STANZI CAN PLAY WHEN HE GETS BACK…BLAH, BLAH, BLAH WHATEVER…BUT THIS JVB KID HAS THE TOOLS…HE IS A DIFFERENT KIND OF QB THAN STANZI…ALL OFFENSIVE PLAYERS WITH THE ABILITY TO CATCH THE FOOTBALL BETTER START RUNNING HARDER ROUTES…AND BE READY TO CATCH THE BALL EARLIER IN THE PATTERN…JVB AIN’T GOING TO HOLD THE OLD THE PIGSKIN…AND YOU KNOW WHAT? HE AIN’T GOING TO LOB IT TO YOU…
HEY MARVIN…RUN YOUR McNUTTS OFF…RUN HARDER…THE BALL IS BEATING YOU TO YOUR SPOTS…
HEY TREY STROSS…RUN HARDER…AND BE READY FOR THE BALL AT ALL TIMES…NOT WHEN IT WORKS FOR YOU…
HEY DJK…HE’S NOT PERFECT…MAYBE CATCH THE BALL IF IT IS NOT PERFECT…
DARE TO BE GREAT OFFENSIVE PLAYERS…BEATING THE BUCKEYES WITH JVB IS NO DIFFERENT THEN GONG IN THERE WITH STANZI…I KNOW THE PLAYERS WILL BELIEVE THAT COME GAME TIME…I HAVE TO BELIEVE THE STAFF WILL HAVE THEM READY TO ROLL…
IF HAWK FANS DON’T BELIEVE, THEN DON’T WASTE YOUR TIME WATCHING THE GAME AND ROOTING FOR IOWA…I DON’T WANT YOU AROUND… BECOME A BULLDOG FAN OR MOVE YOUR LAME ATTITUDE TO STORY COUNTY ON SATURDAY…
THE TIME IS NOW…COLUMBUS DISCOVERED AMERICA, NOW COLUMBUS WILL DISCOVER THE NEXT GREAT IOWA QB…IT’S NOT A CHANDLER, IT’S NOT THE FUTURE WITH Beutjer…
IT’S CHUCK LONG WITH GAS!!! IT’S JVB…SAY IT WITH ME…CLAP YOUR HANDS…JVB, JVB, JVB…
THIS TEAM IS TOO GOOD…THIS TEAM HAS DONE TOO MANY GREAT THINGS TO GO TO THE SHOE AND LAY DOWN…LOOK OUT DOUBTERS…BEWARE… ME AND K.O.K. LIKE THIS KID.
GOOD STUFF FROM BOB. AFTER THE SEMI FINALS I WILL ALSO GO BACK AND COMPARE PRESEASON RANKINGS WITH THE TEAMS THAT MAKE THE SEMI’S.. NOW WILL BE DOWN TO 24 TEAMS FROM 192.. KEEP IN MIND. WE HAVE FOUND THAT SOME OF THE TEAMS WITH A TRADITION OF WINNING THAT GET TO THE DOME… HISTORICALLY HAVE AN ADVANTAGE IN THE ATTRITION THAT TAKES PLACE IN THIS BRUTAL PLAYOFF SYSTEM…
PLUS IN 3-A A COUPLE OF POWERHOUSE DISTRICT RUNNER UP PROGRAMS GET TO HOST AND LOOK FOR REVENGE IN REMATCHES. PELLA HAS BEEN IN THE PLAYOFFS 21 TIMES.. CENTERVILLE GOT THEIR FIRST OFFICIAL PLAYOFF WIN LAST WEEK… WILL THE DUTCH GET THEM BACK.. SAME THING FOR THE VIKINGS OF DECORAH.. 4 STATE TITLES 19 TRIPS TO THE PLAYOFFS.. HOSTING NEW HAMPTON A TEAM THAT BEAT THEM EARLIER THIS SEASON.. CARROLL WILL BE HOSTING BUT TAKES ON CLEAR LAKE AND THEIR DOMINANCE OF DOME RUNS.. I KINDA LIKE THE TIGERS..
IN 2-A CAN OSAGE END NORTH FAYETTE’S RUN? IKM AND KEUMPER HAVE BOTH BEEN TO THE DOME IN RECENT YEARS.. BUT IKM-MANNING HAS MORE TRADITIONAL SUCCESS. IN 1-A THE ONLY REAL ONE TO LOOK AT IS ??CAN CLAYTON RIDGE BEAT WEST BRANCH?? THAT WOULD SHOCK ME..
AND IN 8-MAN TRI COUNTY LOOKS TO BE THE REAL DEAL.. BUT CAN THEY KNOCK OF THE TRADITION OF LENOX. I SAY BEST GAME OF THE NIGHT..
ANKENY HAS BEEN TO THE DOME 6 OF THE LAST 8 SEASONS… JER-PA AND THE BOYS LOOKING TO MAKE IT 7 OUT OF 9 WHEN THE GO TO MARSHALLTOWN.. IT WOULD BE ANKENY’S 9TH TRIP TO THE DOME.. THE BOBCATS HAVE NEVER BEEN ON THE CARPET/FIELD TURF. DOWLING HAS BEEN TO THE DOME 16 TIMES.. THEY HAVE TWO STATE TITLES.. URBANDALE DOES HAVE ONE IN 3-A IN 1975… THEY HAVE ALSO BEEN TO THE SEMI’S 4 TIMES.. THE LAST TRIP IN 4-A WAS IN 1986…
JUST FEW NOTES.. THE BEST TEAM WILL WIN, BUT IT TAKES A SPECIAL TEAM OF CHARACTERS TO GET TO THE DOME FOR THE FIRST TIME, FOR SURE WHEN YOU HAVE TO BEAT A PROGRAM THAT HAS STANDING ROOMS BOOKED AT THE CEDAR FALLS HOLIDAY INN.
Urbandale is on the rise. They are fueled by senior stud running back Jevoury Wedderburn, he had a buck 35 and a TD last night……. but perhaps the heart of this team is Chad Gilson, after the QB broke his hand earlier this season.. …. he continued to play LB and moved to Fullback on Offense.. That is AWESOME.. and says a ton about this kid. He is back at QB NOW… I expected Urbandale to be better this year, but I will admit, I never expected coach Anderson’s team to be a Dome Contender.. I missed it. Gilson went off for 6 TD’s last night in the win over defending state champ WDM Valley.. Later this week I will try to give you some more highlights of these two and the U from our archive.
It is here, we are on our way to M-TOWN.. We will find out more about the Bobcats as they host Waukee. Two pretty stud QB’s on the field tonight. We are looking forward to it.. Bob made some good points about this game and gave you tons of other things to look for tonight.
